Module summary
This module is designed to support the development of academic skills in your study within Learning and Teaching. It will address areas such as academic and reflective writing, referencing and research skills, drawing on the elements most appropriate to study on your course and for future practice.
Objectives
To enable students to develop the academic skills necessary for successful independent learning
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will have an understanding of:
- the University's IT systems
- the elements of academic argument and critical analysis
- information searching
- the Harvard referencing system
- development planning
- a range of theories on reflective writing and activities in writing reflectively
Syllabus
- exploration of the University’s resources and systems (Library, IT, VLE and other services) and their use in accessing and managing
information;
- introduction to a variety of materials and methods designed to help study effectively.
- critical thinking and reflective writing
- referencing and plagiarism avoidance
- effective note-taking

Students will be required to produce a series of exercises which will form the basis of their portfolio. Students will be encouraged to use the online materials in the VLE and will be required to engage with online skills materials, e.g. skills@library.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module during seminar sessions and via formative feedback on the exercises for the portfolio. Tutors will be available via email and telephone.
